What happens when a servo goes wrong in an automatic transmission?

Hello again, okay so we changed the transmission fluid, filter and everything else. We even used some sea foam transmission check up and for about 6 times the reverse worked. It actually backed up when we put it in reverse! Okay so now it is not working again, but this time I called a transmission shop and they said it could possibly be the servo, what is this? What does it do? I have a 97 Jeep Wrangler with an automatic transmission and four wheel drive. Your help is appreciated.|||the transmission uses 2 elements to control reverse. the direct clutch, which is really common on these transmissions to fail, but along with reverse, you would have problems with 3rd gear. the other is the rear band. it does use a servo, and yes, they can break, or the seals can get hard, or the band could break, be out of adjustment, or could just be burned up. if this happens, you would have no engine braking in manual 1st. to test the servo, drive down the road and slow down by puling the shifter into manual 2nd, and it should slow down, and then into manual 1st. if it feels like it goes into neutral, bam, there is your problem; the servo. it should REALLY feel like it wants to stop the car. in either case, the problem is internal to the transmission and it would have to be replaced or rebuilt.|||the servo is on the side of the transmission. it,s so the gears will take hold and for the gears to change. probably the spring is broke.|||should have used lucas trans conditioner and you would be driving instead of talking
