What causes a transmission to shift hard from first to second?

Every time I take off from a stop the car shifts hard from first to second. It doesn't do it with any other gear change. I've had the fluid and filter changed recently and it didn't help at all. If there is anything that I can do short of completely replacing the transmission please help me out. I can't afford a new car right now and fixing this one is my only option.|||The transmission bands need to be adjusted, as they have worn a bit.A quick $80.00 should cover it.|||I would assume that you have an automatic transmission so I would continue to answer your question with that in mind.

I would suggest if you can replace the Torque converter and your problems will be long gone.|||Check the level of the automatic transmission fluid. Sometimes a low level makes for hard shifts between gears. Or if you havent changed the transmission fluid in 60,000 miles it might need to be change|||The only other thing you can really do without having to replace the transmission is to chekc the fluid. internal componants wear out over time, it is normal for transmission to start shifting harder once they get older. to check the fluid start the car and let it run for about 5 minuts. keep the car in park and put the park brake on. pull the dipstick and wipe it clean, and then rechekc it. the fluid should be in the crosshatched section. cince the car is a front wheel drive the front wheel drive transaxel (transmission) are not that great in any front wheel dive car, everything is compressed into a small space. i would check the fluid and if its good, take it to a TRANSMISSION SHOP not a garage, and have them take a look at it, the reason why i recomend a transmission shop is because transmissions are a black art. no one really knows how to fix them, but tranny guys do.|||could be a few things like solenoids, bands, fluid. i would have it checked at a trans shop as they do free estimates. if ya find one that wants to charge, the one that will check for free is right around the corner and if they say ya nee alot of work, get a second opinion without telling second shop about the first shops diagnosis
