How much would it cost to rebuild a transmission on a 96 Tahoe?

I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe that just blew its transmission at about 162,000 miles. It has 37 inch mud tires, a 3 inch body lift and a 6 inch suspension lift, which I am told affects the transmission.

To buy a rebuilt replacement, you're probably looking at $1500. Depending on who you have do the work, rebuilding yours *might* be a little cheaper. In your application, I would recommend getting one with a heavy duty rebuild kit to hopefully make it last a little longer.

Then, seriously consider changing the gearing in the axles to accommodate the tire size and relieve a little stress on the transmission and transfer case.
