How to keep a transmission in 1st and 2nd gear?

We are racing a 1997 Neon in a 4 cylinder circle track class. I would like to run in 2nd gear, but do not know how to disable the auto upshift for the automatic (3 speed) transmission. I have put it into 1st and it still shifts up to 3rd. Is there a way to disable the shift?|||u can unplug the transmision and it should stop it there should be one plug in the front youll have to remove the battery tray to get to it from the top (witch is a lot eaier then trying to get two it from bottom and there should be a plug on the right side of the tranny i dont remember how i got to it though hope this help|||LOL 3 speed!!!|||get a stick shift...

How reliable is a transmission after you convert it from automatic to manual?

how does it shift?

run?

and is it as good as a stock manual transmission that comes standard on a car?

does anyone here have any experience?|||You can not convert an automatic transmission to a standard. What you can do is remove the auto and replace it with a standard. I've done it and it's reasonably simple. Go to a salvage yard and get the parts from a model like yours. Get everything at once and you're still sure to miss a couple of small things but with a little elbow grease, you'll have a car that performs as good as the factory installed standard. If you really want to improve on the transmission, buy an aftermarket transmission such as a Richmond or similar and use it instead of the factory standard. Also get yourself a top dollar clutch and you'll be all set to go.|||that all depends on how you drive the car...but it should be relaiable...don't know why you'd want to go to a standard transmission unless you are racing though...standard transmissions are a pain as far as I'm concerned.|||Ive never even heard of that being done before.

If you want a manual in your car find a decent used manual transmission for it and put it in it. Dont try to convert a automatic over to a manual.

Maybe im wrong but that just sounds insane to me.|||I have done the opposite. I converted a Manual 5 speed transmission to a Automatic 5 speed transmission (With overdrive) The car never was the same.

It would stick hard into gears and first gear would rev extremely high. However this may have been our lack of knowledge in the way it was installed but even odd in-s- and outs-s would act strange such as when shifting into "R" or Reverse the hazards would on occasion engage. Make sure your wiring is correct. Hope this helped.

How much would a transmission from a junk yard be around?

I need a manual transmission for a 91 ford ranger v6 2.9L 4x4. Around how much would one be and also out of what trucks and years would work?|||The price is going to vary, depending on the junkyard.

So why are you asking us? Call around, and get prices.|||As has been said prices will vary depending on the wrecking yard.

For any questions that you have regarding interchangeable parts and which parts will fit which different vehicles, talk to the folks at your local wrecking yard.

Most wrecking yards are networked with many others across the U.S. and can order most any part you need. They can usually have the part for you within a couple days.

They also have access to all the interchangeability data you could possibly ever need right at their fingertips.

They'll give you accurate information and in just a few minutes.|||At a pick n pull I would guess $100-$200? A regular junkyard will charge according to all factors, such as if it is low mileage from a wreck. But I would doubt you would pay more than $500. The junkyard can tell you the compatibility for free. Just see what they've got. You've got to shop it around. See if anybody will sell it installed at one price. You might want a new clutch at the same time.|||shoudl be aroung $300 to $500

Does anyone know if you can drop a transmission from the bottom in a 2000 ford focus or do you have to pull it from the top?|||the transmission is on the bottom of the car so i would assume you would have great difficulty getting it out the top, i havent ever heard of pulling a transmission from the top before. you focus i think is front wheel drive and the CV/ drive shaft should be one of the lowest points in the engine bay and they connect directly to the transmission|||this might educate you about a tranny removal replace process for fords

Can you strip the transmission by towing an all wheel drive car with two wheels down?

My dad recently towed an all wheel drive vehicle with the hind wheels down. He said it felt like they hit a rumble strip and pulled over. Could the transmission have been stripped by doing this?|||It depends on if your dad had the 4 wheel drive in gear or in neutral? If he did have it in any gear then yes it could have. Also it depends if the vehicle is normally front or rear wheel drive without the 4x4 engage. If it is rear wheel drive then again yes. But if it is front wheel drive and you pulled it with the rear down then no.|||If the transmission was put into neutral before being towed, then no. It could be the drive shaft u-joints let go and caused the thumping.|||Yes..

How long does it take a manual transmission on a Corolla 01' to go bad without fluid?

Ok, The car insurance is trying to get my mother to pay 50% for a transmission she bought at a dealer ship. Problem is, she just bought it used at 4-5 months ago. They claim it was negligence for not changing the Transmission Fluid. But she did change it at Wal-Mart! Can they still charge her under full warrenty?|||If the car is still under warranty, and it has been properly maintained then they have to fix it. It sounds to me like they are trying to pull one over on your mom claiming that she was negligent, This car is known for problems with the transmission. get a lawyer if need be, and make them pay his fees too!

The car may go a few seconds without tranny fluid, or it could go a long way.|||First you must determine the root cause of the prblem. if the tranny leaks its fluid by itsel, its a waranty problem. if wal-mart put in the wronk fluid, or not enough, then they are liable for full damages, and if this is the case, you need to have it in writing by a certified mechanic, and be adamant with management that it be taken care of. such was the case with my brother in 05'|||So long as she was doing the maintenance on it, and having WalMart change the fluid according to the manufacturers recommendations is sufficient, then she should not have to pay for any repairs.

If the damage was done because she allowed the transmission to run out of fluid, then she is getting out cheap by only having to pay half. Warranty companies do not pay for anything that fails due to normal wear and tear, or anything that fails due to negligence.

If she still has the receipt from WalMart, I would fax that to the warranty company as proof of maintenance.

Prepare to fight a bit for this, the first people you deal with at one of those places, usually work hard to find a reason NOT to pay for damages.|||All she needs is the receipt from Walmart.

You left out a lot of information that would help people answer your question. You never said many miles the car has. How many miles has it been driven since you bought it? Did they say all the maintenance was up to date when you bought it?

You need to know what is the manufacturer recommended interval for changing the transmission fluid?

Go to the dealer and see if they have maintenance records on the car. When was it changed last? It may be possible to go to another dealer and see if it had a extended warranty by the prior owner and see if they can tell you whats been done to the car before you bought it.

Sounds like you need someone who knows cars and is very assertive to go to the dealer with you.

You may have to take them to small claims court.|||"Used Car Lot" Not a New Car Dealer's Used Car Section?

What kind of manual transmission oil does a 1988 acura legend need?

It's a 5 speed stick shift. The tany has been leaking and I think it need oil. or a new transmission.|||%26gt;%26gt; The tany has been leaking and I think it need oil.

You need to fix that

Acura (and honda) use ENGINE OIL for manual tranny. Don't ask me why. I know because I own a Honda civic manual shifter.

Gear oil (usually used in Manual tranny) will make the shift really stiff and hard and wear out the syncro-mesh.

Good Luck...|||F-4 will do for tarnny as well as power steering as it is for high mile or older cars and works great putting mositure back in gaskets and seling leaks. It will take an hour or so of driving to feel any effect.

How much for a new or rebuilt transmission>?

I have a 1998 Ford Escort and the transmission is going...I have heard this is a sealed unit and computer controlled so it cannot be repaired...DOes anyone have an idea of how much a replacement would be? Or what else possibly could be repaired on a transmission with rough and slipping shifts. The problem is the worst when the car is cold.|||Has the fluid ever been changed? Maybe a servicing would help.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to a transmission store like AAMCO or MrTransmission. They are in the business to sell transmissions, with good markups on parts.

Search the yellow pages for a local ATRA certified repair shop. You can call the BBB and find out if there are any negative comments about the place if you want.

They can give you some insight on what the problem could be, as well as the cost for a complete rebuild.|||The best thing to do is get rid of it fast. Sell it, because it will cost you more than the car is worth.|||my advice is if you're not putting it in yourself, and you can't get a good deal from the junkyard, your tranny work will probably cost more than the car is worth. rebuilt tranny: $500-1500 depending on quality, new tranny: forget it! i've been in you're situation with an 87 ranger, i shouldve been smart enough to sell the damn thing the first time the tranny blew!

How much does it cost to change transmission to automatic from manual?

I'm planning on buying a 1995 Jeep Wrangler, the only problem I have with the car is that it has a manual transmission, I can drive manual but I'm not to comfortable with it, so how much for it cost to switch the transmission to automatic?|||More than the vehicle is worth.

Chances are it would require the change in gear, ratio of both axles if four wheel drive, supporting cross members for the tranny, and possibly the pcm itself.

( power control module)|||find the local 4x4 vehicle shop and ask them for price--most of the shops would be happy to do this for you especially if you throw in the manual trans--those 4 wheeler type of guy/gals break lots of trannys so it would be a win-win situation.|||Its not worth it. Why is my automatic transmission having trouble switching for first to second?

When I start driving my transmission dosn't want to switch to second gear, but if I left of the gas and then press the gas again, it switches.|||First check is fluid level. If it is low, top it up. That is really the only service you can do without specialized knowledge and tools.

Second check is fluid condition. If it is old and/or burnt, fluid should be changed. A transmission shop will check it out for other problems, change fluid and filter, and road test.|||check your tranny fluid. and your tranny may be going out also.|||Check your fluid and filter. Probably best to have it serviced.|||Make sure there is enough transmission fluid in it. Without fluid it will not work at all. The fluid could just be low.

If it still does not shift with full fluid in it then you have a bad transmission and need to bring it to the repair shop.|||Automatic trannies are something of little magic black boxes. Much of the problem are specific to make and model.

EX: My Audi A4 tranny used to thump just as I got off the gas (during acceleration) only at 15 MPH. It turns out I had a vacuum hose break. This is very specific to this model.

So you really need professional help.|||Its the clutch be sure to use it when you change gears from first to second.|||I had a car that did that. Check your transmission fluid. It may be a little low. If that isn't it get you a shade tree mechanic to fix it.|||First thing to do is check tranny fluid level on flat driveway, parking lot road etc,not on an incline. Also with most vehicles this should be done with engine running, tranny in NEUTRAL! Double check owners manual before proceding.WATCH OUT FOR FAN BELT,DO NOT WEAR ANY LOOSE CLOTHING WHEN DOING THIS! If it is not caused from incorrect fluid level the bands inside the tranny probably need adjusting and possibly the linkage.Try to find local transmission shop who might offer free transmission check.DON'T wait as that will only compound the problem!

How much will a transmission replacement cost?

I have a crx with a motor swap. The transmission is grinding a little. How much would it cost to get replaced.

And no its not going to be more than the car is worth.

Because that car is worth ALOT to me.|||

On any major repair I recommend that you get 3 or 4 estimates from local service facilities unless you are lucky enough to have a shop with an absolutely stellar reputation available. Compare the estimates and choose one of the middle estimates. My reasoning for this is the low estimate either left something out or worse is deliberately giving a low ball estimate to get you in and then when your car is all torn apart they find all sorts of critically important things wrong with it which run your bill through the roof. Do the leg work and be an informed car owner. No reliable technician or shop will give an estimate for repair site unseen except as a budgetary estimate which will be a range from the middle average to the unusual high end possible.

How do I disconnect transmission lines from my radiator?

I have a 1993 ford taurus 3.8L V6 automatic GL. I need to replace my radiator but am having trouble disconnecting the "transmission lines" from the radiator. Do I need to use a special disconnecting tool or can I use box wrenches? No matter what tool I need to use can you explain to me step by step how to disconnect the two lines?|||You need to buy special wrenches that look like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2655-FLAR鈥?/a>

They are called a "flare nut wrench" and provides the required grip without distroying it. Do not use an open end wrench of any quality, simply not good enough.|||these other guys are wrong, there is a little special tool you need, you insert it around the tranny line and it releases a spring lock in the fitting, push in on the line, push the tool in and then pull the tranny line out of the radiator, these can be tuff to make them release, as far as the tool goes, dont know if any auto parts stores sell these but ford dealer can get you one|||There are special wrenches to remove this type of line, but it is possible to remove them with a standard wrench, but if the corners start to round, stop immediately and go buy or maybe rent the tools to remove the lines.|||You need to use quality open end wrenches. Cheap wrenches do not fit properly and will round off the nut. Spray a little penetrating oil on the fittings and tap them a few times to work the oil in to help loosen them.

How long to break in a new transmission?

Last month, I had to get my transmission replaced for my 1992 Saturn automatic. My mechanic told me that it would take about 1,000 miles for my new transmission to fully break in. I have been driving it for over a month and every now and then it shifts from 1st to 2nd harshly, usually in the morning when the engine is cold. Is this normal? Will it take 1,000 miles for it to break in?|||If you bought a brand new car from the factory and it did this, would you just accept it, I doubt it.

And if you do find an inexpensive one, you must consider the labor charges involved if someone else is doing the job.

If you're doing the job yourself, I would suggest your neighborhood Junk Yard as the first place you search, next would be Ebay. Your truck may use the same transmission as the 1998 MAZDA B-3000, but I would suggest that you research this a bit more, and it may be the same transmission used in newer models also. So, search for the transmission using both names and descriptions and see what you can find. Also, take into account the mileage of the vehicles they were removed from and look for the warranty information, which is extremely important when shopping for used parts. If purchasing from Ebay you have to figure shipping charges as another issue.

How does a manual transmission work?

I know what a manual transmission is, but I am finding a hard time figuring out how it works.|||how exactly it works? well whenever you push the clutch (on a hydraulic clutch) the master cylinder pushes fluid down your clutch hose to your slave cylinder, the slave cylinder pushes your throwout bearing back releasing your clutch plate, now lets take a step back, your flywheel is connected to your engine via the crankshaft balancing out the forces (somewhat) of your cylinders creating a smoother engine the flywheel transfers the mechanical force of your engine into speed for your car, now whenever you release the clutch your clutch engages by your throwout bearing being released and pushed back in, now whenever you shift gears manually you are moving gears in and out depending on the gear you have selected, you have helix cut gears (side cut gears) that depending if you need a gear reduction or an overdrive gear will reduce or increase your tire speed and you also have a couple sets of gears, i believe right around 4 that your power will transfer through different gears in a set pattern for whatever gear you have selected.|||lets start at the flywheel. it rotates at engine speed and acts as a balancer using centrifugal force to help the crankshaft rotation. When you depress the clutch pedal you are engaging the pressure plate that pushes the clutch disc away from the flywheel. the clutch disc rides on the flywheel allowing the engine's rotation to turn the transmission input shaft. when you release the pedal, the clutch moves back to the flywheel and BOOM! off you go.

i hope this was simple enough so you could understand it.|||ok folks, it looks like a few of you have not torn into an automatic or a manual in a while so the idea that they work the same is just false.

the clutch is used to seperate the power coming into the trans so that you can shift with out that nasty grinding. power comes into the trans ans is transferred to a cluster gear where that power is transferred to a second gear then power moves on to the output shaft, at that point we are out of the trans so to this question i am done. ill give you a site to look into that answer a little more.|||it works about on the same order as an automatic except with a manual you have to change the gears and automatic it changes the gears for you.|||automatic shifts for you, manual, you do the shifting...

It does not do this hardly at all after it warms up from running it a while. Do you think a filter and fluid change will solve this problem. It has never been driven rough and only put in 4 wheel drive a few times.|||Fluid and filter change is worth a try. You have a 50/50 chance that it will solve the problem. And it's the cheapest way to go.|||first of all check the fluid level....what you are describing is common when the fluid level is low.......if the level is good you can try replacing the filter and fluid......changing thefilter should be done every 30,000 miles....also you should stop by a jiffylube or the like to get a fluid flush this is a mor complete fluid change.......if all that fails then you probably have a tranny pump failing!!!|||yes i would deffinately get a fluid change if you haven't since you got the car. you should have it changed once every year to year and a half just as basic maintinance.|||yes for sure a filter/fluid change would be beneficial for your jeep

How does the shiftronic transmission work in a Hyundai Tiburon?

I am looking at getting a Tiburon from Hyundai with the shiftronic transmision. I was wondering how this transmission works. I understand that the car will function like an automatic but I was wondering if the car autmatically shifts for you when you are using the shiftronic. Does it shift for you at a certain RPM level? An explanation would be greatly appreciated.|||The trans has 2 modes...one fully automatic and the other manual without the clutch. In manual mode you will see the + - signs which tell u whether u r are downshifting or up-shifting. When you are accelerating in manual mode, you will have to up-shift when the rev's get between 2500 and 5000rpm. If you r coming up to a corner and moving quickly , you can downshift twice, the revs will go up and the tires will grab, and you can whip around the corner quite nicely. When in manual mode and coming to a stop, you don't have to downshift as the transmission does it for you automatically. Possibly there is a "plug in wiring loom" for that too! You would have to look at wiring and see!

Most people would prefer a 4 speed (or 5 speed) standard! Since it would be faster than automatic, -- because of slippage of torque converter, -- a "lockup converter" will help some here though, however it will be more rough shifting on rapid acceleration!|||You'll need a flex plate, bell housing, rear transmission mount, shifter inspection cover, possibly a cross member and driveshaft (some are different form auto to manual) and depending on how you're going to use it you might want to change the rear gears also.

I desperately need to change my transmission fluid and filter, normally I don't let maintenance lapse like this but, having been out of work for over a year changed my priorities. Anyway, I need to change out my fluid and filter, both easy but, I also need to purge the transmission fluid and I was wondering if anyone knows a good way to do this at home without any special hardware.|||There is no good way to purge the transmission at home, this requires expensive specialized equipment not available to the Do-It-Yourselfer.

However you can change the fluid and filter at home. This will replace most of the transmission fluid so a purge isn't really necessary. Be prepared as this is a messy job.

Get yourself a large drain pan to catch the transmission fluid.

Place the vehicle on jack stands.

Transmissions do not have drain plugs. You need to remove the transmission pan to drain the fluid.

Loosen and remove all of the bolts except one or two on a corner. Then slowly start removing the remaining bolts a little at a time. When the seal is broken you will lose a significant amount of transmission fluid so be ready. Most of the fluid will come from the opposite corner of your remaining bolts.

After the seal has been broken continue to remove the remaining bolts and pan.

Drain the remaining fluid from the pan. There may be some metal shavings in the pan. This is normal as long as there is not an excessive amount.

Change the filter. Reinstall the pan using a new gasket. Fill the transmission with new fluid of the correct type.

Start the engine and allow the engine to reach operating temperature. Run the transmission through all of the gears on the gear selector stopping for a few seconds on each gear. Top off the transmission fluid to full.

Drive the vehicle several miles. Top off the fluid. Check for leaks.

After a week or so check the fluid level again, but it should be OK by now.|||just remove pan to drain it all you really need to do is kind of messy but not hard dont need to flush or purge it at all when one does a filter change at a shop they dont flush it either a big catch pan remove bolts one at atime let it slow drip into pan do not remove all of them or it might drop and make big mess filter nothing to it really done it a thousand times|||Yes, you can change the transmission fluid and filter at home.. You will need to have a jack to lift the car up.. Jack stands so you don't kill yourself saving dollars. And a ratchet and the right size sockets, have a large open pan to drain the fluid in, depending on your vehicle, there could be several quarts in there, especially if you have adde extra fluid hoping that would stop the transmission from slipping.. I figure since you are asking, you are having transmission issues..Anyways, to change fluid, try loosening the bolts of the pan s that you get one corner of the pan to break free first, that way the fluid will kind of be channeled into the big pan you already have under the car..This can get real messy in a hurry if you aren't careful. Also many automatics have an inspection plate between motor and tranny, you can remove this plate, and some converters have a drain plug, so you can get that fluid out as well. Look at the fluid, it brown or black, tranny fluid smells a little wierd, but does this smell burnt?? Look on the screen of the filter, see anything silvery or shiny?? espcially silvery grey crap that is stuck to filter, that is the clutch facing of the trannys internals, so your tranny might need further mech help than a simple fluid change.. If all looks good, switch out the the filters, and use a thin bead of sealer to attach gasket to pan so that it stay put whileyu get your bolts started.. This is a pain inth butt doing yourself.. I try to get one in the center of one of the sides, start that one and then get one in opposite to that, run them in about halfway, then get bolts in all four corners then fill in the blanks, try to tighten them equally t that the gasket snugs down has a whole, crank em in easy, after you feel the bolt stop, turn it aboutanothe half turn, dn't want them too tight, the gasket can split and then your tranny is gonna leak.. refill fluid, if you have some miles on this car, I would suggest a quart of LUCAS tranny fluid.. They make a good product, it will help to rvive that tranny, or if it is slipping, it might help you get some more miles on the car before you have to replace tranny, good luck.. When people talk about evacuating fluid being a fancy deal, actually they are jut using a vacuum pump o get fluid out.. You have a Kerosene siphon?? The kind that is a plasti tube with a ball on the top tha ya squeeze?? I have duct taped a length of flexible 1/2 tubing to the straight part under that ball and sucked most of the fluid outof the valve body that way..

How do you get transmission fluid off of your driveway?

My transmission pan busted over the weekend and all of the fluid leaked on the driveway. I have already put kitty litter on it to absorb whatever it would and now there is a big dark spot on the white (concrete) driveway. How do you go about fixing this? Thanks!|||I haven't looked for a commercial enzymatic cleaner which would eat up the fluid. One might be available. But what works well for motor oil and could work for transmission fluid because it is oily is liquid laundry detergent. Put it all over the spot. Cover it with some sort of plastic to keep it from drying out. Leave it for 8 hours or longer. Then squirt it with the garden hose until all the soap is washed away.|||What I do is wet the surface and put comet or Ajax or similar product on it and let it sit for a week. It will bleach it out. You may need to do it twice.

Owen|||TRY SPRINKLING KITTY LITTER ON IT FIRST TO ABSORB THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. THEN SWEEP IT UP. THIS WILL HELP.|||Use WD-40 spray lubricant leave for few minutes then wash off with very hot water and detergent something like Tide will be sufficient scrub with a stiff brush then rinse again with hot water and allow to air dry Or you can use TSP cleaner use very hot water and scrub with a brush then rinse with cold or hot water Good Luck !

Will teaching others to drive a manual transmission on my new car cause any significant damage?

I just got a new Honda Fit and was planning on teaching my 2 brothers how to drive with the manual transmission this weekend. I expect a lot of bumpy starts and plenty of stalls. My question is how much will this really damage the transmission? Thanks!|||It probably won't damage the transmission unless they over-rev the engine in the wrong gears, but they may be damaging the clutch if they're constantly riding the clutch. Hondas have very light clutches so it shouldn't be very hard to teach your brothers how to drive on your car.

Good luck with the lessons! I want a Honda Fit myself!|||It shouldn't damage your transmission maybe a little wear on the clutch start them off in a flat parking lot|||you have to worry about ground gears and a possible blown engine with dangerous revs

Why does my transmission shift hard into reverse and drive?

I have a 2000 Mercury Sable with 132,000 miles on it, it still has the original engine, transmission, etc. Recently I've noticed that sometimes the transmission will shift hard (clunk) into reverse and drive from park. By the way, the transmission shifts gears just fine when in drive. Any ideas?|||you know something? i had a oldsmobile that did the same thing. it would clunk from park to drive and from drive to reverse. the GM garage said it was a bad motor mount or the bushing is worn in the shifter on the transmission. i said the heck with it and ended up selling it.|||well it coud be tim to change ur tranney flud and filter it will most likly stop the gerking in revirse and drive and will get u better fule mileg amd make ur car pull better|||Sounds like a high idle.|||Bad U joint for sure get fix asap or you could drop you drive shaft and cause you more damaged or you can you get hurt.|||worn joints will clonk and judder when going into gear on older cars but make sure the idle speed is correct, probably about 800rpm, any faster and the hard shift will be inevitable

Should I replace the transmission on my Civic before trading it in at the dealership or not?

I'm planning to trade in my 97 Civic this weekend for a 06 Rav4 or an 06 Element. The transmission on the Civic is running, but very faulty. Would it be better to get it fixed AND THEN trade it in? Or will dealerships take them as-is and $crew you in the process?|||Trade it in and dont tell them. They're gonna screw you over on the price of your new car so F them. I traded in a truck that had a blown head gasket. The water in the radiator looked like chocolate milk. They never noticed till I was out the door. Then they fixed it and sold it a couple of days later. Like I said before......F them.|||You always get screwed at a dealership. They claim to pay off what you owe but in fact inflate the price of the new car to accomodate this.

Don't bring the car in when you negotiate the trade. If you must then see if you can get it running well enough that the problem won't be as noticable. Even if you get less you will end up losing money if you pay to have it fixed first.

Have a freind go in the day before and negotiate a price without the trade for the same car. Then you can compare that to the price they quote you with your trade to see if you think it's fare or not.|||Ask the dealership what their conditions are for trade ins. Some places may mandate the car be in full working order and will have it checked out by a mechanic just to make sure. Otherwise- hell no! It will more likely then not cost you so much to replace the tranny that it defeats the purpose of the trade in.|||The more things you fix or add to your Civic, the more money you can get out of it.

If I was you, I would replace the transmission (and keep the paperwork to show how much you paid for it) and whatever else needs to be done with it, and then I would trade it in.

Dealerships would take thing as is and then fix them up and charge what they want for it. This way, if you know what needs to be fixed and then do it and everything else, then, you can see that money coming to you. i would do it!|||it won't make that much difference either way|||DEPENDS TAKE IT IN AND SEE WHAT THEY WILL GIVE U FOR IT.. IF IT NOT REAL NOTICEABLE. DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. I REALLY DON'T THINK THAT THEY WOULD GIVE U WHAT IT COSTS TO HAVE A TRANSMISSION PUT IN|||No,you wont get anymore for it.

How much will a transmission replacement for a Volvo 270 be?

I have a Volvo S70 that needs a total transmission replacement, how much should I expect?|||A Million Gazillion Dollars!!! Now that the smart *** answer is out of the way, nobody can tell you what it'll cost for sure. I don't know where you are(Prices are different in different places) It depends on if you are doing it yourself or sending to a garage You can buy a used transmission for very cheap and put it in yourself) If you take it to a garage it depends on if you are taking it to a dealer or a regular mechanic.(Dealers usually cost a bit more then regular mechanics) or if you are going to pay a mechanic buddy to do it for you.|||is it AWD

How many quarts of transmission fluid does a 2006 Silverado 1500 Z71 need?

Im going to have my transmission flushed and have new fluid put in so how many quarts of fluid would I need?

Oh and how many quarts of differential fluid would I need too?|||Careful what you fill both the tranny and differential with. The ATF needs to conform to the standards from the factory. Theres a reason for that. Anyway, the differential can use anything from 10-90 gear oil to ATF. If in doubt, go pick up a haynes or chiltons manual for that year of vehicle. Its a great 24 dollar investment. And if you don't want to do that, just call the chevy dealer and have them give you that info, they'd be glad to.

What are some signs that my automatic transmission is going bad?

Hello, I have an automatic 1999 Camaro with 104,000 miles on it. Everything seems fine with the transmission and engine right now.

What are some signs that I should look for in the future that my transmission is going bad. Subtle ones that will get worse over time...|||Definite signs would be leaking of transmission fluid, burning smells or if you change the fluid the color is a burnt orange color, whining noises when in any specific gear, if an automatic - constant changing of gears when going constant speeds on flat surfaces, lack of shifting in or out of gears.

Those are some pretty tell-tell signs there is a transmission problem. Heat is a huge challenge to a transmission, if at all possible change your transmission fluid at intervals listed in your owner's manual and I also would suggest using the fluid recommended in that manual.

I hope this helps! 100M miles on a modern car transmission should not give much issue, but if your manual recommends service - it's better to be safe than sorry. Following their recommendations could save you a few thousand dollars.|||1]the gears take longer to engage.

2]when driving it feels as if the gears are slipping right before entering a new a gear.

3] if you have change the trans oil in a while dont ever change it in life again cause the old oil has more body which takes up the wear in the clutches and if the oil is changed less body more wear and hence it'll start to give trouble.

4] when yr car is all fine dont think about those things you might hurt the car feelings and it might give trouble ( i no)|||Keep an eye on the fluid levels. What would cause a transmission to fail, and how much would it cost to get it fixed?

My boyfriends 1994 Saturn just recently (today) won't allow him to shift. The gears have not been working smoothly lately but this is the first time it has refused to shift. We are wondering what could be causing this (transmission, etc.) and how much it would cost to have it looked at/fixed.|||Plenty of ways for the gear box to go phut! Basically you have a lot of spinning cogs that need to move and mesh. If any part of that wears or breaks (possibly as a result of oil loss) then you are looking at a rebuild.

The cheapest way would be to get a reconditioned one and fit that. The absolutely cheapest would be to go to a scrappy and get one from a scrapped same model and fit it yourself but that is risky as the one you take might be as bad.

Best of luck sorting it.|||I had my insurance declare my car a total loss, a 2005 Lancer, because the transmission. So Im sure its very expensive.|||That can cost some money...my husbands tranny on his accord went out about a week ago, and cost him $2500.00 to fix it|||Is it an automatic or a standard. A rebult automatic for your car less tha $2000 installed. If it a manual it probably needs a clutch or maybe just the hydraulic slave or master cylinder is faulty.

Go to www.autozone.com|||changing gears poorly (manual tran.) can trash the transmission. thats the main one i can think of. also, being out of transmission fluid or old trans fluid can do it. i had an 87 omni that had a trashed trans. and my dad got it repaired for a bit of money. i want to say around 800 but he never told me how much it cost. thats just a guess.|||well his tranny prob went out cuz of how he drives. if you drive crazy with a stick and you dont shift correctly, your tranny and clutch go out on you very fast. and it costs at least 3 grand for a new one. or that is how much mine costed for my ford.|||If the rest of the car and engine haven't been maintained all that well, it may be better to sell it and buy another car. Having an old transmission "rebuilt" is very risky. The only way to make sure you get your money's worth is to have a "remanufactured" transmission from GM or Jasper Engines and Transmissions installed, and $2500 is the minimum total cost to expect for the Jasper transmission including installation. You will have a better warranty also.

How many quarts for my oil and transmission fluid in my 1987 Suburban?

I've just bought a 1987 Suburban with a 350 TBI engine, it has an automatic 700 transmission, assuming the speedo has only rolled over once, it shows 137,000 miles. What would be the best oil to use, and how many quarts? Also i'd like to change the transmission fluid, best kind and quarts? What brand of spark plugs work good? Thanks ahead of time.|||Engine: 5 quarts if you change the oil filter.

Transmission: The 700-R4 transmission holds 6 quarts if is dry but dropping the pan to change the filter will only drain about 5 quarts because the valve body and front pump will retain at least a quart. Add 4 quarts of Dexron III ATF after you have finished changing the filter and then start the engine, check the fluid level with the engine running in PARK, and add accordingly. Total system fill is 11.5 quarts if you decide to completely flush the entire transmission fluid system.

Spark Plugs: ACDelco CR43TS (gap at .035)|||It will take 5 quarts if its the standard pan. Some people put on bigger after market pans but the stock engine used 5 quarts. Drop the pan on the trans and change the filter. Usually when people get a transmission service they only exchange the fluid, so you end up with the old filter. It will use about 6 quarts, you only get whats in the pan not the converter. But I still prefer half the fluid and the new filter. Also don't forget the clean the magnet at the bottom of the trans pan. With that many miles save yourself some money and don't throw it away on expensive synthetic oil. Use conventional, I would use 10-40 with that many miles. And before all the driveway hero's (non professional mechanics) start crying because they like to use synthetic oil here's why you don't need to. When you are the original owner and you have always used synthetic it will help and increase the life and cleanliness of the engines internals. But when you get an engine with that many miles and have no idea how often the last owner changed oil you are not going to improve anything by now switching to synthetic.|||i have an 88 c1500 and i use 5 quarts of kendal oil 10w-30 and i have a aftermarket transmission cooler on my truck, but be for i added the cooler on I would use about 6 or 7 quarts of valvoline max life dext/merc for GM vehicles, but if your looking for the best fluids to put in it both oil and tanny fluid i would go with Royal purple. hope this helps.|||about six qaurts of oil in the engine and maybe about 7 in the tranny i had a suburban cant remember exactly how much in the tranny get 8 just to be safe and fill it till it starts pooring out then screw the bolt back in

How much should a transmission fluid and power steering fluid flush on a 2004 Mazda 6?

My dealer said that the power steering fluid and the transmission fluid were black and need to be flushed and changed. I just don't want to get ripped off.|||If you don't want to get ripped off, don't go to the dealer. Go to a lube shop. There is NO way your power steering system needs to be flushed after only 3 years unless you've somehow managed to put 200k miles on it.

The transmission should be flushed every 30k miles. It costs about $90 at a lube shop.|||A LUBE SHOP WILL NOT USE THE CORRECT FLUID IN YOUR TRANSMISSION WHICH COULD RUIN IT. A REAL TRANSMISSION FLUSH IS $159.95. DO NOT GO TO A LUBE SHOP. THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF AND NOT DO THE WORK.

What to look for in a used transmission from a junkyard?

What to look for in a used transmission from junkyard? I know I should flush out the tranny oil, but is there anything else from a transmission sitting in the junkyard for 10 years?|||Smell the transmission fluid. If it smells burned, that's not a good sign. Choose another one.

Then take it home and drain the old fluid, replace the filter if there is one and all the accessible seals. If you want to replace the modulator, that's not a bad idea. Beyond that, you are going to spend a lot more time and money.|||I own a transmission shop, and to be honest with you, you are asking for trouble. To begin with, any transmission that has sit for 10 years is going to have to be rebuilt, and will have many rusted parts. All the rubber components in it will have gotten hard and brittle by now. It will leak internally and externally. If this is the only transmission you can find, then at least have someone take it apart, and inspect the critical parts inside it. You never mentioned if it was an automatic or a straight drive. If it's a straight drive, you may be OK if you replace the input shaft, output shaft, and shifter seals, but I would remove the side plate, and inspect it for moisture, and signs of rust on critical things such as the shafts where the seals run, and pitted rust area's on the gears themselves. An automatic is just beyond using without replacing all the internal sealing rings, and pressure seals. The torque converter hub where the seal runs is more than likely rusted and pitted to where it would leak severely. This is just not a good idea.

Glad I could help you. Good Luck!!!|||its risky getting anything like taht from a junkyard. depending on the price I would get it and take the chance.|||Price, mainly. You can't tell by looking, and most of them sell as is, so you may have a heavy piece of trash, that's the chance you take. If the price is close to having yours rebuilt, then rebuilding would be the way to go. If you could buy 4 from the junkyard for the price of the rebuild, then you might take a chance with one or more, hoping one will work for you.|||try to find a junk yard like smart parts who can tell you how many miles are on it, the check for brown, or burnt smelling fluid. of course once installed change the screen and fluid. i installed a used tranny and have had good luck. while it is better to use a new or rebuild money isn't always available. also if it's a mitsi fwd drive tranny, trust me get at least a rebuild.|||Check for water in the oil. Repeat step for rear output shaft. Don't forget to apply some grease or trans. Vaseline on inner part of seals. Check Converter For rust or other forms of contamination. I would personally replace it. But if your in a pinch. Some converters have a drain plug.Drain as much as possible. Or check in your area for a shop that can flush it for u. Good Luck.

What are the signs of a bad transmission control switch on 1997 explorer?

I have a 1997 ford explorer with a 5.0 v8 engine. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that I had problems with the transmission control switch. I have had instances when the car hesitates when going in reverse or in drive. I heard these are the signs of a bad tranny but is the control switch the problem here or is it the transmission? And where is this switch located?|||i think he means the range sensor that is on the side of the trans linkage and will not cause your problem a check engine light would be on for that so if fluid is not low you could try changing it with the filter but if still does it then will need rebuilt the rubber lip seals in the trans are worn

Recently transmission fluid was sprayed all over uncer the hood. What is the best way to clean it up?

At my 60,000 mile routine service....the transmission fluid was added but not drained. Because of increased high pressure in the system it exploded all over the inside of the engine compartment. I've heard steam cleaning may damage the electrical components in the car.... So how is the best way to clean it up? The service center who did this has offered to take care of it. I am not bringing my car in to them even for that. So what is the best way to clean baked on and sticky transmission fluid?|||The best thing i can tell you to use is castrol super clean you can get it just about anywhere you can either get a spray bottle or a gallon if you have a lot to do i would suggest a gallon it is about 6.00 at wal-mart this is some good stuff I use it all the time just spray it on and let it sit for about 10 minutes or so and spray it it off with a water hose just make sure your coil pack or distributor cap whichever the case may be a plastic bag works good

How much would a transmission rebuild cost?

I have a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII and the transmission needs to be rebuilt in the near future, how much would this cost? Also how much would it cost for a front end alignment?|||Tranny Rebuild: $800 to $2,000 depending on where you go to have the work done.

Front End Alignment: $50 to 150 depending on whether it is just the front end or a four wheel alignment and of course who you have do it.|||Anywhere from $750. to $1200.on transmission.About $60. on alignment.|||This is a RWD isn't it?? If so, it will have an AOD. Good transmission, just had problems with planetary gears. I would say the rebuild should cost around $1000. You may want to look into ordering a refurbished tranny. Watch the length, they made these cases in a few different sizes....just enough to cause problems with a long drive shaft. Good luck.

Automatic transmission not shifting into overdrive when car is cold?

I have a 2003 Hyundai Accent and just had transmission worked on however when the engine is cold it is not shifting into overdrive. What are signs your transmission is going out?

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS (Automatic, V4). When I accelerate to get out of first, I hear a little rattle. The engine doesn't stall or anything like that, but it does sound like it rattles a bit. Switching from drive to reverse is smooth and acceleration is fine after you get out of first, but that faint rattle is concerning. Is this normal for a V4 or could my transmission be slowly going out?|||Mitsubishi does not make a V4 motor, it's a straight 4 cylinder. The noise id bound to be exhaust shields not the transmission. The drain plug is 24mm.|||Ive had a 97 honda accord that made that noice once it got close to shifting...then it started,to get worst every other day...id say sell the car asap and try,to get your moneys worth out of it while, you can.|||i'd have a transmission place look at it-but go to one who is a quality certified place. most transmission people out there are crooks.

Why transmission is slipping after you change fluid and filter?

I have chenged transmission fluid and filter and after it's completed, the transmission slips at about 30 miles per hour. I'm wondering if I did anything wrong. I put the right amount of fluid into it.|||sounds like there is not enough fluid in the tranny, check the level with engine warmed up and the tranny in park.|||You didn't say how old or how many miles where on your car before you did the trans fluid change. Sometimes if you wait too long and have too many miles on your tranny the parts are worn enough that the old fluid with some of the metal shavings and stuff in it is the only thing keeping everything moving right with the belts and gears and stuff. Then you go ahead and flush the system and remove all that garbage and put fresh oil in it and now you can feel that the parts are worn and slipping. I would recommend taking to a transmission specialist and have them look at it. Could be it just a minor tune up of some the components.|||You did not mention what kind of car you own. Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth state right on the trans dipstick to check the level, hot, engine running and in NEUTRAL, not park (set emergency brake). Checking in Park will cause the level to be low and slip. Also, the filter needs to be identical to the one removed. Holes not lining up can block fluid flow giving the same result. A dented oil pan can restrict flow to the filter. Re-check that fluid level before you ruin your trans. Always read the dipstick for information about fluid type and special instructions.|||Let me guess, the car/truck has very high mileage. Assuming you put the correct type and quantity of fluid in it, sometimes putting new fluid in it actually flushes out crud that was helping old o rings seal, and now they are leaking and you lost pump pressure. You can try an additive but no guarantees. I have seen this happen many times with high mileage transmissions.|||This can happen if the fluid in the car was very old. It happened to me, then I tried various solutions (recheck fluid level, then try slightly overfilling, had a free check at a trans shop who said I needed an r%26amp;r). Finally tried 4 ounces of auto-rx and its been fine for 10k miles (160k now on car)|||what kind of fluid? if you dont use the correct automatic transmission fluid you will ruin your transmission and did you check fluid level in park or neutral with engine running|||Sounds suspiciously like not enough fluid.

How often should I change my transmission fluid?

People say that whenever I change my transmission fluid, that I should change the filter too. Is it expensive the replace the filter in the transmission?|||Your owners manual should reccommend when to have your transmission fluid changed. You should look at doing it every 30,000 miles or so. As for the filter, you must change the filter when you change the fluid, the filter is not expensive and should be included in the price of the change (confirm with mechanic). If you are over the 30,000 mile mark by like 50,000 miles you should smell the fluid to make sure it does not smell burnt, if the fluid is burnt you may not want to change the fluid at all. at that point your transmission is already ruined and it is only a matter of time before it breaks and changed the fluid will only make that happen faster. The new fluid will expand gaskets and wash away dirt that is keeping everything together. Check with the mechanic to see if the fluid is burnt.|||Every 50,000 miles. It will cost $70-$80.|||Depends on the type of vehicle you have. Use the recommended maintenance section of the owners manual as a guideline. DON'T LISTEN TO THE BUTTHEADS AT A QUICKIE CHANGE PLACE. Your transmission only takes 3 quarts when drained and filled. I drive a 1995 Chrysler Concorde. I started my car this morning. Transmission fluid started spewing out from underneath the front of the car to the ground. I want to have a 4 speed or 5 speed. Any suggestions welcome. And where could i get this transmission for a good price?|||I'd go with a C-4. The C-6 is strong, but heavy and is a power robber. If it's just a street car and the motor is pretty much stock a C-4 will be fine. If it's a track-only drag car then a BUILT C-4 from PA or Art Carr is the way to go. How do you operate a tiptronic transmission?

I have been driving an automatic all my life and have no idea why you shift gears or when. My new car has a "geartronic" transmission which allows me to shift gears eventhough I have an automatic transmission. My question is, which gear do you use when and why do you shift? For example, when would I use the 5th gear vs 1st gear?|||Well theres quite a bit more to it than looking at your tachometer, but basically one rule of thumb is to NEVER let the tachomoter (engine speed RPM's) hit the red line (probably around 6 or 7? it varies car to car). But basically for good mileage, keep the RPM's low, but at the same time, you want to cruise at about 2k RPM. You may want to have someone physically show you how.|||I've driven these transmissions on Audi A8's, Mercedes and BMW's. I flick the wrist anytime I want - low rpm's or high rpm's. You use 5th gear on the highway and you use 1st gear when you start off. I usually go to the highest gears for fuel economy purposes and I like downshifting when pulling up to lights. It's not the same as driving a 5 speed but you have more control this way.|||start in 1st, at 3500-4000 rpm go to 2nd.......If you start in 2nd or higher, the car will accellerate very slowly. Or just stay in the fully automatic mode.|||rpm goes near redline you shift thats my way and i'm stickin' 2 it

What causes a transmission to shift hard from first to second?

Every time I take off from a stop the car shifts hard from first to second. It doesn't do it with any other gear change. I've had the fluid and filter changed recently and it didn't help at all. If there is anything that I can do short of completely replacing the transmission please help me out. I can't afford a new car right now and fixing this one is my only option.|||The transmission bands need to be adjusted, as they have worn a bit.A quick $80.00 should cover it.|||I would assume that you have an automatic transmission so I would continue to answer your question with that in mind.

I would suggest if you can replace the Torque converter and your problems will be long gone.|||Check the level of the automatic transmission fluid. Sometimes a low level makes for hard shifts between gears. Or if you havent changed the transmission fluid in 60,000 miles it might need to be change|||The only other thing you can really do without having to replace the transmission is to chekc the fluid. internal componants wear out over time, it is normal for transmission to start shifting harder once they get older. to check the fluid start the car and let it run for about 5 minuts. keep the car in park and put the park brake on. pull the dipstick and wipe it clean, and then rechekc it. the fluid should be in the crosshatched section. cince the car is a front wheel drive the front wheel drive transaxel (transmission) are not that great in any front wheel dive car, everything is compressed into a small space. i would check the fluid and if its good, take it to a TRANSMISSION SHOP not a garage, and have them take a look at it, the reason why i recomend a transmission shop is because transmissions are a black art. no one really knows how to fix them, but tranny guys do.|||could be a few things like solenoids, bands, fluid. i would have it checked at a trans shop as they do free estimates. if ya find one that wants to charge, the one that will check for free is right around the corner and if they say ya nee alot of work, get a second opinion without telling second shop about the first shops diagnosis

Why my automatic transmission is getting hard only in the afternoon?

I have to drive 20 km to my job in the morning. When I use reverse for parking I can move the lever easily. In the afternoon, when I get back home (same distance) and I am going to park, transmission is hard to put in reverse or parking position. Every time I go to see a mechanic everything is OK and the guys laugh as I am crazy or something worse.|||Trans flush wouldn't help changing from drive to reverse or park. Strange problem sorry don't know what to tell you besides its not a fluid problem waybe the shifter cable somehow.|||Sounds like you need a transmission flush and new transmission filter.|||if you have a floor shifter you probable spilled some pop or Coffey in it, when it heats up it gets worse. very sticky, almost sounds like plastic breaking|||your not crazy or anything,it might actually have a shift cable stretching out on it causing this to happen usually it can be adjusted back out of it,but if it stretches bad enough it will have to be replaced, probably the reason it doesn't do it in the morning is because its cooled off, once it sets in the heat all day long it can ,make a difference in it,id take it somewhere and see if they could adjust it,that may be all it needs, good luck with it hope this helps.|||You wouldn't by any chance be parking on a sloped hill? On a Manu-Matic transmission do I still need to change the gears manualy just without the clutch or do I have the option of pure automatic and the gear shifting?|||It's an automatic transmission with gear selection like in the older classic muscle cars with ratchet type selector on the drive shaft hump between the seats.

Kind of like the "slap stick" in the older Dodge Chargers.

My 2002 Dodge Neon has been acting strange lately and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if my transmission is going out or is it just a side effect from the flush and fill the car lot where I bought it did. Once Im driving and I begin to stop somewhere around 20 25 miles an hour is tugs rather hard as its down shifting once Im stopped and the car begins to idle it shakes like its trying to die but if I put it in nutruel it stops shaking and runs like normal...please help!!|||Have someone you know check the level,if it's been overfilled it can make it act this way,it's very important to have the correct level.too much and too little fluid causes erractic shifting.|||From your description, i think that your shifting gear got problem.

I once encounter this problem before, it's either your gear box oil is running out, or it had malfunctioned.

Better go to the workshop to check it out.|||Sounds like something is keeping the torque converter locked up. I would have it diagnosed as soon as possible before it becomes a major repair. It's possible there is just a wire that has come lose on the transmission and it needs to be reconnected. Have it checked out TODAY..|||You need to have it checked, but it could be idle control or throttle position sensor, it doesn't do it in neutral because there is no load on engine.

Soo I gotta get it check....What does all this mean?? Do I need a new tranmission?? It runs fine its a 92' with 90,000 miles on it.|||From something they mentioned on a TV show, you might also want to make sure you're using the right transmission fluid. There are two kinds, Type F and Dexron. One of them is thicker than the other and if you put the wrong one in it can burn, resulting in scorched transmission fluid, which might be why you're seeing brown. While Type F was for Ford and Dexron is for GM, other brands could use either of these, and you need to find out which is the correct one for your automobile.|||The fluid should have been changed long ago because it's supposed to be bright pink, not rusty colored. So you can't get a transmission flush now because that might loosen all the gunk built up in the transmission and make it fail sooner. You could have a shop drop the pan and change the filter and refill with fresh fluid which will mix with the rusty fluid stored in the torque converter etc.|||Probably just a seal. If the tranny is working you don't need to replace it as long as you get the problem taken care of right away. This is not an easy fix, probably need to take to a mechanic.|||That's most likely your transmission pan gasket. Look under the car and see if it seems to be leaking from a pan with eleventy billion bolts. It'll be leaking from all around the pan if so. If so, go purchase a transmission filter/gasket kit from any parts store. Also get them to help you pick out the right kind of transmission fluid...you'll need about 4-5 qts if it's a typical front wheel drive car. Also grab an oil drain pan. Then simply put the car on ramps or jackstands, unbolt enough of the pan that it starts leaking fluid quickly into the drain pan (you're going to make a mess...be prepared). Once a lot of the fluid is out take the pan the rest of the way off, make more of a mess. Take the filter off...if you look at the new filter it's really obvious where the old filter is. Bolt the new filter on. Scrape the old gasket off the pan, put the new gasket on, bolt the pan back up, fill the transmission with fluid, and you're good to go. Transmission serviced and leak fixed. ;)|||IF IT IS JUST THE PAN GASKET WHICH IS VERY COMMON, JUST REPLACE THE GASKET, FILTER AND ADD NEW FLUID.

IT THE FRONT SEAL IS LEAKING BIGGER JOB AND MORE MONEY.

GET IT CHECKED AND SEE WHAT IS LEAKING FIRST AND THEN DECIDE.

My Car Is A 1993 Ford Escort And Sometimes It Wont Shift Out Of First Gear And Sometimes It Will. My Dad Thinks Its The Transmission Filter. What Do You Think? And How Much Does A Transmission Filter Cost And Is It Hard To Put A New One In?|||The filter may cost up to $35 or so. You can do it youself. Go buy the "HANES" (I think that is the way it is spelled) repair manual for your car. It is about $20. You can do most of your own maint. and save lots of cash.|||It's not too hard to replace the filter...but it sounds like it may have a sticky valve. I would change the fluid and filter first and put some transmission conditioner additive into it. Hopefully that will fix it. I don't think they had computer controlled shifting on the escort in 93 so if you really have a problem with it not shifting out of 1st gear, and this doesn't fix it, you can get a used valve body or buy a new one for a few hundred bucks and replace it. It's the assembly above the filter. Be very careful removing it as not to loose anything. Good luck.

Transmission?

I have a four cylinder transmission, and it is automatic. When I drive it seems the gears from 1st to 2nd are getting stuck. I took it to a local transmission business, and they said that 2nd to 3rd were getting stuck and I should get it fixed fast. Estimated cost 995 dollars. I got a second opinon and they told me to try this product made by Lucas, and it helps fix the slip in transmissions. I am not sure if what to do? I heard the product was good. Should I get 2 bottles of it? Please help!!|||I am a bit fuzzy on exactly what is meant by "getting stuck" but I'll assume you mean it is taking a long time to upshift. My advice is to do something simple first, if you haven't already. Flush and change the transmission fluid and also change the filter. Being an '02 vehicle, I find it hard to believe that it would be slipping that badly from wear, though it is possible. A fluid flush and fill, along with a new filter, might just help you a lot. If it's still sticky, then try the Lucas conditioner. It won't hurt and might help...and what I've suggested is a bunch cheaper than the $995 number you were quoted.

And yes, the fluids are added through the dipstick tube; that's why it has a wider opening than the oil dipstick.

Hope this helped.|||Try the bottle and get a second or third opinion. Transmission ?

I have a 02 dodge neon, 4cylinder with 88,000 miles, automatic transmission and recently my transmission started acting up. I've kept it up to date on services but my transmission light came on so, I had it checked out and they said that I needed a new transmission. I didn't beleive that cuz it's too soon for it. It shifts pretty good in all gears but when I'm driving it down a long stretch road it tends to grab 1st and 2nd gear. 3rd is a lilttle tough to get. I'm not sure what's going on? I was thinking it could be a sensor but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has had this problem before? The mechanic also said my transmission was overheating and my torque converter I think that's what he said was off? Does anyone have a clue what I should do? At this point I'm running out of ideas and thinking of just getting a new one but they estimated it at $1,800 for a decent one. I sad thing is I'm still paying on it and that's more than what I owe on it.|||First of all if you took it someplace like Aamco or Cottman you may just want to turn around and grab your ankles because you are about to get taken advantage of. Speed sensors are very common on this vehicle and can cause this problem and a lot of places will try and sell you a complete transmission. Take your vehicle to an independent transmission repair shop and get a second opinion quick. Stay away from Franchise shops. Speed sensors will run about $150.00 installed.

However it is not uncommon for these transmissions to go bad at that mileage

There are no adjustments on that transmission.|||It sounds as if you have a brake band slipping in your gear box. This could cause your box to overheat .I should take it to a transmission specialist they should be able to adjust. The torque converter being off Sounds bollocks.Regards Mick|||Talk to people you know and find a reputable tranny shop, and get another opinion. How is the transmission range sensor removed on a 2002 Montero Sport?

I get error code P0705 and from research I think I need to replace the range sensor. I found it on the transmission but how is it removed. It appears to be black plastic housing and there is not much room to work. Thanks for all help.|||The range sensor is on the drivers side of the transmission. It's the part that the shift cable goes to and also has the electrical connector for the PRNDL lights that tell you what gear you are in. Buy the new part at the dealer and take your vin number with you so they order the correct part. You might ask someone for a print out explaining how to adjust the cable to the new sensor/switch.

What are the benefits of a Transmission flush for your automobile?

Can you notice a difference besides it just being good for your long life of your transmission and engine? I'm wondering. I was going to get me a transmission flush for my car, will I notice a difference in the way it runs afterwards that will seem better?|||The most common reason a transmission flush does damage to a car is because of its age, or lack of maintenance. As long as your car has been serviced regularly, you should be fine having it done.

However, before you do it - pull your tranny dipstick and smell it. If it smells burnt you are probably already too late, and a tranny flush could finish off your transmission by loosing up the sludge that is holding it all together. If the fluid smells ok - and still shows sign of its original pink color, then a flush is not a bad idea. Flushes should be considered part of routine maintenance, say, every 50,000 miles or so. This should prolong the life of your tranny, but it will not make your car suddenly perform better.

|||Like he said, a transmission flush could remove the grime that is holding your parts together. On the other hand, when I got the flush, I noticed a drastic change in the shifting and overall responsiveness in my car. Granted the fluid was like mud.|||No, i think a transmission flush, dislodges all the grime and screws up the transmission. I don't recommend doing it, same thing goes for the engine flush.|||New fluid, new filter, rids the tranny of harmful particles that can stop up your orifices and wear the tranny further. It should be done at least at 100,000 miles.

What is the transmission gear called in a BMW that allows you to accelerate faster?

When you push the transmission shift inwards, the dash says "SD", and this allows you to accelerate a lot faster. What is SD?|||It simply means Sports mode. "D" simply means Drive, which is how you know that you are in the Sports mode as opposed to Steptronic manual mode (where you will see 1, 2, 3... etc).|||Had a look around but cant find anything.

I would guess it will mean somthing like sport dynamic

The sport will allow the car to rev higher in each gear acheiving better 0-60 times. It could also depending on BMW you have stiffen the suspesion.

Or i could be totally wrong

What kind of transmission additive fluid should I use?

I have a 1997 Grand Marquis that was given to me and its way over the transmission flush and I dont want to flush it as it will cause more damage. What kind of Additive can I put in to make it shift better?|||By you saying "to make it shift better" I take it that it isn't shifting properly. First check the level of the tranny fluid when the car is at normal operating temp. If low add tranny fluid. If not low or adding to low did not help, drain the tranny, remove the tranny pan and change the filter, put pan on and add proper amount of proper type of fluid. Then if it still doesn't shift correctly or slips, you are in need of mechanical repair. No additive, regardless of what they claim, will repair a transmission.|||If the transmission is slipping, it's too late to add anything.

If it's not, remove the pan and clean it out thoroughly and replace the filter. Then take it to a service center and have the transmission fluid completely flushed and replaced with new fluid. There is specific equipment made to perform this service - it literally flushes out the old fluid while pumping in new fluid.

I don't recommend any additive - just a high quality transmission fluid.|||the only additive i would recomend is made by Lubeguard. It is a very hi quality and is very effective.

If the trans. isn't shifting properly, any additive may not help, you should try replacing the filter first. It is however possible that its just too far gone for anything but an overhaul.|||i agree with anthony and david---if the filter is dirty this will cause blockage and the trans pump can not pick up fluid fast enough to supply the needed amount for the trans to function properly---drain it and change the filter---does slippage happen at take off speed or during higher speeds say above 20 m.p.h----higher speed slippage is definately a sign of dirty fluid and filter|||don't have it flushed just pull the tranny pan off and change the filter in the tranny and clean the pan real good and put a new gasket on it and put the pan back on and fill the tranny with fluid, more than likely the filter is getting plugged up.|||The best thing you can do is have your transmission fluid and filter changed dont worry about causing more damage just as long as you change the filter to it will be fine|||change the tranny oil and filter(never flush it), then get some (BG TRANSMISSION SEALER AND CONDITIONER), that stuff is great, cost a little, but its worth it.|||brake fluid - a very, very small amount..{i didn't say that} heard it through the grapevine..
