My Automatic transmission doesnt engage and makes a whirring sound, how bad is this?

The automatic transmission wont go to gear and makes a high revved whirring sound. I have a mitsubishi lancer 1993. Is it worth getting work done on it.|||Really Sorry but probably not! If you could score a transaxle from a junkyard then maybe, but other than that you may want to scrap it!|||low in fluid ,it has a leakage.|||have you checked trans fluid?|||Have you checked the tranny fluid level?? Your transmission could also be shot, one other thing that could be wrong is you have a broken cv joint
