Transmission?

My Car Is A 1993 Ford Escort And Sometimes It Wont Shift Out Of First Gear And Sometimes It Will. My Dad Thinks Its The Transmission Filter. What Do You Think? And How Much Does A Transmission Filter Cost And Is It Hard To Put A New One In?|||The filter may cost up to $35 or so. You can do it youself. Go buy the "HANES" (I think that is the way it is spelled) repair manual for your car. It is about $20. You can do most of your own maint. and save lots of cash.|||It's not too hard to replace the filter...but it sounds like it may have a sticky valve. I would change the fluid and filter first and put some transmission conditioner additive into it. Hopefully that will fix it. I don't think they had computer controlled shifting on the escort in 93 so if you really have a problem with it not shifting out of 1st gear, and this doesn't fix it, you can get a used valve body or buy a new one for a few hundred bucks and replace it. It's the assembly above the filter. Be very careful removing it as not to loose anything. Good luck.
