Can you strip the transmission by towing an all wheel drive car with two wheels down?

My dad recently towed an all wheel drive vehicle with the hind wheels down. He said it felt like they hit a rumble strip and pulled over. Could the transmission have been stripped by doing this?|||It depends on if your dad had the 4 wheel drive in gear or in neutral? If he did have it in any gear then yes it could have. Also it depends if the vehicle is normally front or rear wheel drive without the 4x4 engage. If it is rear wheel drive then again yes.
