How many Volvo owners with automatic transmission have had to replace the transmission on their car?

I've been told by two reliable mechanics that Volvos with automatic transmission are much more likely to need major repairs or replacement than the same make with manual transmission. I'm seriously considering a used 1999 Volvo S70 with over 65,000 miles. The car is being sold by the original owner who has all the maintenance records, and mechanically everything else checks out, including the 60,000 mile service (new brakes plus other things) and a clean Carfax report. I drove cars with manual transmssion for 15 years and strongly prefer an automatic.|||Don't be fooled the Volvo trans is the same in the Toyota it's a t50 trans on the inside and vary reliable if you keep the maintenance up. On the drive shaft is a bushing witch is the leading cause of failure to the Volvo transmission. Easy fix If it wears out replace it|||Alot of bad answers on this. Even tho Ford owned Volvo as of 2000, ford has NOTHING to do with Volvo products. Ford instead has used Volvo designs in their own cars. Get your facts straight people.

|||I replaced a transmission in only one of my volvos. It was beloved 1985 740 gle that had just reached 350,000. We ended up putting a turbo transmission from a 240 in there, which also meant we had to change the drive shaft out for something shorter as well. 350k on 1 transmission isn't bad.

|||Chris is correct. Ford uses Volvo stuff, not the other way around.

Also, 740's and 940's (rear wheel drive) are nothing like the newer front wheel drive systems. The older rear wheel drive transmissions were more reliable because they did not have the electronics in them.

|||That would be a dumb statement. In ANY car, manual transmission is more reliable than automatic. There are reasons why we still make manual transmissions today.|||If it checks out and the transmission fluid has also been changed every 30k miles than go for it. The trannys are good. Stay away from Volvo 2000 or newer, it's a Ford dressed in Swedish clothing.|||Well tell you what I'm a has been Volvo test Driver. You might say Autos are a bit more trouble then Manuals. But with the Manuals we had to replace the Clutch systems on a regular basis too.|||haha....I'llleave it at that.......|||The only problem with the trans on that model Volvo is the lack of a replaceable fluid filter. Knowing that , it becomes clear that regular maint must be preformed on it. That is why Volvo now recommends flushing the old fluid out regularly. If properly maintained the trans on that car should preform to the standards we have come to expect of Volvo power trains. I personally still like a stick, but in the five years I spent in Berkeley Ca. maintaining Volvo's , our shop never had a trans failure on a frt. wheel drive Volvo. David Walsh was adamant on regular service, not repair.|||I own 2 Volvo's a 93 940 turbo wagon with 215,000 miles on it. Transmission has not been replaced and works like new, and a 96 850 Turbo with 165,000 transmission is original and works fine.

What transmission will work best on a 454 engine in a 1986 Chevy 1500?

This vehical has an automatic transmission and also Im running 35'' tiers and do not use it to haul very much.|||if you are having problems and you feel the transmission needs to be replaced then replace it withone just like it or have the one in it rebuilt , the reason I say this is if you try useing anything else there are modifacations that have to be make before it will work right.|||It depends what you want to do with the truck a TH-400 is a very good heavy duty trans. if set up right but not practical for towing you can go to a junk yard and get a low mileage 4L80E (not the 4L60) it is a newer model heavy duty trans with overdrive and a tow mode you will only need to convert the electronic torque convertor lock-up mode to manual with a switch (which jegs sells very cheap) you can also use a 700R4 which has been beefed up with a towing kit it also has overdrive and a extreamily low 1st gear ratio you will also have to convert the lock-up mode to manual ....|||i would either use a TH400 or a beefed up TH350, one set up for HD use

Can you ruin a transmission while driving with no transmission fluid? Did it now car wont go in reverse?

Hit a curb. Drove car home. Car is leaking transmission fluid and now won't go in reverse.|||Fix the leak, top off the fluid and drive around. It could just be a sticky control solenoid that will fix itself.|||You've made a big mistake. When you see fluid is leaking from the car, regardless what it is, other than the condensation from the ac, you should've stopped the car right away.

Think about it this way, it is a lot cheaper to tow the car to a garage to fix the leak than to replace the tranny.|||Without the fluid, you're going to need to buy a new tranny. Not cheap.|||Cars need transmission fluid...it's like blood, without it they won't last long.

Can a transmission from a 1994 Jeep Cherokee be transfered to a 1994 Jeep Wrangler?

The transmission on my 1994 jeep wrangler is going out. To buy a new transmission is really expense but a friend of mine has a good transmission from a 1994 jeep cherokee that i can buy for cheap. Will the transmission from the cherokee work for my wrangler, they both are automatic and have a 6-cyl 4.0 liter engine.|||Not as just a bolt up and go thing. The problem is that the 94 Wrangler came with a TF999 transmission while the 94 Cherokee came with the AW4. They have different input shaft lengths and are dimensionally different. The second problem comes from the transfer case. The 94 Wrangler only came with the NP231. The 94 Cherokee came with either the NP231 or the NP242. If you have the time, you could make it work but it is not going to be easy.

I replaced the seal of the transmission and I am having difficulty to install it. When I turn the bolts, the transmission is not turning. However, when I remove it it turns. What I am doing wrong ???|||The site on the Internet to find

What transmission oil should I use for my mustang?

I have a 2004 V6 mustang with a manual transmission. Also, how often am I supposed to change it? I think it's about every 30k miles or so. I've also heard gear oil can work well.Thanks.|||It would be best to check your owners manual. That might also have the maintenance interval. If you don't have a manual, or it doesn't have the schedule, you can download a PDF version of each here.

Fill level is outlined on page 203, and fluid type is Mercon ATF as specified on page 222. Do not mix Mercon with Mercon V, which is a synthetic. (note 3, page 223) All in Owners Manual

I don't see fluid change for Manual Trans until 120,000 miles. (page 26 of maintenance schedule) It is under much less stress than on an Automatic Trans.|||not sure abut what weight of oil you should use but i recommend any thing from royal purple|||Royal Purple Max ATF Transmission Fluid

What do i need to change 1968 automatic transmission to manual?

I have a 1968 Mercury Cougar with E-6 351 8 cylinder engine in it. I have an automatic transmission that I want to change in to Manual. I know I need new transmission, clutch cables and pedal, is there anything else I would need to make it work? Oh and can I put 5 speed transmission in it instead of 4, which transmission is it?|||bell housing, Z-bar, new crossmember, new driveshaft, shifter and all the linkage.|||you may need to look a the drive shaft and check for length from the tail shaft.
